Water Colors and Lei Making

With this project we learned how to make Lei's and different techniques for water coloring. The different techniques are dry brush, wet on wet, blend, and crayon resist.

To make the lei's we started off with tracing or drawing flowers on construction paper. After we had 24 flowers cut out we started to string them. We first strung a flower and then a small cut piece of straw in between each flower. We continued to do so until our string was full.

An extension of this could be in science or geography. You could study the different types of flower in Hawaii and the parts of the flowers.

3-D Art

This was project was teaching 3-D design. We made this piece by cutting or ripping paper and making folds, swirls, circles or any design we could think of and gluing it outwards on a piece of paper. The teacher at first read "All the Places You Will Go" by Dr. Seuss for motivation and for us to see good example of 3-D looking pictures.

We were required to have 3 different folds and at least 8 piece of paper on our art. We were also told to name our place. I named mine Hil-Villie

A extension of this activity would be in English to have you students create a story about their artwork. They would think of their artwork as a town, since we had to name it, and write about why it was like that.

Coil Pots

This project was about coil pots. We started off with a ball of clay, and worked all the air bubbles out of it. After that we too a section and made a small circular disc for the bottom. After we had made the bottom we started of by making coils. We did this by rolling a section out with our hands till it was long and tubular. After we had a coil made we circled the outside of disc with the coil. We repeated the coil making process and staked them on top of each other until we ran out of clay.

On our pots we were required to have a couple of things; a symbol that has meaning in out culture, a primary, and a secondary color. I used a cross, blue, and green to meet those objectives.

An extension of this would be to have you student research different way clay pots are made. You would have them in groups and they each would make a pot and present how to do it to the class. It could be done as a step by step speech or in art class.

Stamping

This art project was about stamping. To do this project we first started out carving designs into a rectangle piece of stryofoam. We then used rollers and rolled ink over the piece of foam. We then pressed the template into colored paper. We did a railroad theme so we made railroad cars out of the rectangular stamps. We then drew in a background and setting.

An extension of this activity would be to have your students do a research activity on stamping and it history and make a poster about it to share with the class.

Marbling

This art project was all about marbling. To do this project we started out with drawing a picture and outlining it with a permanent marker. After that we cut it out. We used a theme of famous place around the world. We then sprayed shaving cream in tubs and splattered paint on top of the shaving cream. We mixed and designed the shaving cream then into patterns then place our drawing face down into the mixture.  After we took our picture off the mixture we scraped the shaving cream and paint off.

An extension of this activity would be to have your students make a poster about there drawing and place it was located. For example mine picture was on the Leaning Tower of Pisa so I would make a poster with details about the Leaning Tower.

Macrame

This project is done to introduce student to Macrame. Their are many different types of Macrame, in this project we made key chains out of hemp. We each were suppose to put at least three beads on the key chain and have it at least three inches long.

An extension activity could be done in history. Student could come up with a presentation on the history of Macrame and different ways it is used.

Warm and Cool Colors, Puzzle Pieces

To start off this project the class was split into to sections, warm and cool colors. The warm colors could choose to draw a duck or fox and the cool colors could choose to draw a fish or frog. Once we drew our animal, we had to give it texture of some sort.  For the background, we either had to do lines, patterns, or shapes.

An extension of this project could be for science. When you are talking about warm and cold blooded animals, you could related them back to warm and cool colors, to help remember or to explain that the warm blooded animals are to be drawn in warm colors, and the same for cold blooded animals.

Lines and Complementary Colors

This lesson is for a first grade classroom. This lesson talked about lines, patterns and complementary colors. First we started off with drawing thick and thin horizontal lines with our warm complementary color. After that dried, we made vertical lines with our cool complementary colors. After it all dried we cut out the shapes we need to use to make a bunny.
An extension of this activity could be used in math class when talking about lines. You could measure lines, compare thick and thin lines like in the plaid pattern.lines, and talk about were lines go.

Blind Drawing

This activity was done to introduce drawing in a fun way. We did this with blind drawing. We had the student put blinders on a white crayon. The students then drew three flowers on their paper. Next we had the students wet their paper with a paint brush and water. Then the students used watercolors and painted their whole paper. Were they drew their three flower the paint resisted the watercolors. This is what the finished product would looked like:

Our bulletin board with students finished projects

An extension activity of this would be in science class to be studying the parts of a flower. The could draw and label the parts on their own flower.

Cool and Warm Colors

This project was done to introduce students to warm and cool colors. This project is called a hidden drawing. The picture is hidden, and you need special glasses to see the picture. The project is done by drawing a picture in a light cool color. We used a light sky blue color. Our theme was a hidden safari, so we all drew pictures of safari animals. After we were done with the drawing we drew over the picture with warm colors like reds, oranges, and yellows. We drew over the picture in shapes in a pattern form to hide the drawing. We also wrote three clues to be displayed with our animals for people to guess.
An extension activity to be down with this is to have your students write a creative writing story about their animal. Their writings then would be displayed with their drawing.

Eric Carle

This art project was done in the same style of which Eric Carle uses to create the pictures in his books. Some of Eric Carle's book are; The Very Hungry Caterpillar,Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?,The Tiny Seed, and The Mixed-Up Chameleon, just to name a few.

We did this project by first making our papers wich we painted with many different colors and added texture too. We then let the paper dry, and once dried we cut out the setting, and charaters for our book page.  In this project my setting is at a ocean with the bird flying to tell his friend the dolphin that a storm is coming. We then glued down the setting onto construction paper and narrated the story.
This extesnion activity could be used for any grade. The this project would be to have your students make a whole story book out of their pictures. The student would each recreate anoter picture but this time would not narrate the story on the picture. The teacher would place all of the picture so the class could see them and the class would then write out a story together, then write it on the pictures. The teacher would then bind it together and it would become a class book.

Van Gogh Art

Theses two projects were both inspired by Van Gogh's art, and style of art.

Project #1
  • This project was to recreate movement that you see in Van Goghs paintings.
  • This was done by using finger painting, to create that movement feel.
  • Before this was done students were shown some of Van Gogh's art work, they then had the choice to recreate on of his pieces or create there own.
  • There were a few requirements that went along with the project,
    • The students had to create a sort of movement in with lines in there piece
  • They have to create a foreground, middle ground and background to show dept in the picture
  • This painting if from persons point of view of laying on the ground in a grassy area.
  • First they see the flower up really close to them. Next they see the hill and birds in the middle and in back they see the night sky with the moon and stars.
  • An extension activity off this would be to have you students do this again, only with crayons or oil pastels and create there house on a landscape instead of coming up with there own or recreating on of Van Goghs paintings.

Project #2
  • This project to done to show movement again in a piece of art.
  • The students were told to cut shapes out of tissue paper and glue them down to the paper.
  • They then made a landscape out of tissue paper and glued it on top. We used silver Sharpe's and oil crayons to create movement around the tissue paper.
  • This picture is of a city landscape. With he sun setting by the pink and orange, and and getting darker throughout the rest of the picture.
  • An extension activity of this would be to have students tear the tissue paper instead of cutting it and create a abstract piece of art instead of a landscape.  They could use different medias then Sharpe's and oil crayons. I would have them use water color in this extension activity.

Welcome to my Art Gallery

This art activity is done to introduce your student your to you and their classmates. It is a footprint with different things that tell about yourself.  This footprint is the one I made:

  • The water and the sun represent my love for being outdoors and at the lake in the summer.
  • The cookies and cupcakes represent how I love to cook and back.
  • The two people on the top are for my brother and sister who I am very close with.
  • The basketball, volleyball, and track shoe represent my love for sports. I was played all three high school, and did track in college.
An extension activity I would do with this would be to partner up my students and give them two big piece of roller paper. I would have each of them trace each other on the paper. They would then draw and color in themselves however they want to express themselves. They would then place the feet and glue them where they belong.
